NOIR FILMFemme Fatale -
a woman who is very
attractive in a
mysterious way,
usually leading men
into danger or causing
their destruction. 30.06.2024 r.
Tough and sullen cops, elusive and psychotic criminals, sensual, mysterious and mistreated women, powerful businessmen, corrupted law enforcement authorities, dark streets, wet fedora hats, matches in dead ends, bars and pubs filled with smoke of cigarettes and the smell of alcohol… I moved to this sticky, sweaty, oppressive, masochistic and bloody, fatal world during my student’s years every time when I spent the long evenings watching more and more movies – ‘The Big Sleep’ with Laureen Bacall, ‘Gilda” with Rita Hayworth, ‘Double Indemnity’ with Barbara Stanwyck or ‘Don't bother to knock’ with Marilyn Monroe. They all represent Film Noir – a genre I’ve fallen in love with and I still have shivers when I come back to it.
Let’s move to the noir world then, the world in which a simple division between good and evil doesn’t exist, everything happens during the night in a metropolitan jungle that makes you scared and all is heavy with perversion.
This’s the world where black & white frames dominate, but the BLACKNESS is not just that simple. The blackness in noir film is not just low illumination, strong contrasts and ubiquitous shades which were taken from german expressionism by the authors. It also relates to the pessimistic overtone of these films and the sceptic look at the moral order and the harmony. The most common topic is connected with crime and the main character is usually a detective – a man with a doubtful morality, alienated and cynical. There usually appears a femme fatale on his way – a beautiful but calculating woman, rotten to the core, who tries to take an advantage of this guy. Who’s that lady who plays with the feelings and leads the men to the destruction?
Stockings, a red lipstick, pearls or high-heels are not the most important and essential. All she needs is to look at a man - just like Rita Hayworth - and no one will be able to resist her.
Femme fatale is an archetype of a seductive, sensual but dangerous woman. It comes from French and it’s literally translated as ‘a disastrous woman’ or ‘a fatal woman’. It’s a figure who has an ability to dominatem male psyche leading often to its fall or even destruction. Femme fatale is defined mainly by its sexuality. Eroticism is her weapon, she loves exposing her body, she is a master in her body language and the art of flirting. This sensual, mysterious and aware of her power over the men lady leads ruthlessly to the men’s destruction leaving them with their bleeding hearts that no one can save... don't be like a femme fatale, save hearts!
Have you ever wondered how many hearts there are bleeding? How many hearts are there that need some help? How many lives are endangered?
